Vera Koo is a first-generation Chinese American woman. She is a wife and mother, author, entrepreneur and retired professional athlete. Vera made her home on the West Coast but is an avid traveler, food lover and patron of the arts. Her first book and memoir,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The Most Unlikely Champion<\/span><\/em><\/a>, recounts the stories of her life with tremendous introspection and emotional clarity. Her second book, published on the heels of the first one, is titled\u00a0Wisdom and Things: Essays from an Unlikely Champion<\/i><\/a>. It is based on her columns<\/a> found regularly in the online publication\u00a0Women\u2019s Outdoor News<\/i>, along with more life experiences. This new book, another memoir, features content in a wide variety of categories, covering everything from travel to Vera\u2019s faith in God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Koo was born in Qinhuangdao, Hebei, China, and spent her childhood in Hong Kong. She immigrated with her family to the United States she was 12 years old. Vera and her husband, Carlos, own a successful business in the San Francisco Bay area, are the proud parents of three children and grandparents to six grandchildren.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

In a relatively short period of time and at an age when many people are thinking of retiring, Vera became one of the world\u2019s top female athletes in the sport of competition action pistol shooting. She represented the U.S. in several world matches, and won the prestigious Bianchi Cup championship in the women\u2019s division eight times \u2013 which is unsurpassed today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

It is her hope that during this time of her life, she may be allowed to continue mentoring other people to aspire to be their best at whatever they choose to do, and to work with whatever life gives them.\u00a0<\/span>In her own life, she has navigated storms of death, losing a child and betrayal.\u00a0<\/span>She continues her unending faith in God, and attributes it as the reason for her success and stability. She is an \u201cunlikely champion,\u201d and represents that entity in all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Vera was the first and only woman in the history of the NRA's Bianchi Cup to win either National Women's titles. She's won two World titles, and was the first woman to place in the overall top 20 at the NRA Bianchi Cup, in 2001.\r\n\r\nBorn and raised in Hong Kong, Vera's family immigrated to San Francisco when she was 12 years old. She and her husband, Carlos, have a successful business and are the proud parents of three children.\r\n\r\nPrior to retiring from sport shooting just 6 months before turning 72, Vera competed in the regular Women's category, as well as the Senior\/Super Senior category, in which she competed against only male shooters. As one of the elite female athletes in the growing sport, Vera enjoyed mentoring young shooters as she continued to compete at the highest level.\r\n

  • 1999 Top Women's Team at the NRA World Action Pistol Championship in Hamilton, New Zealand; as a member of the U.S. Women's Team, Vera competed with teammate Julie Golob<\/li>\r\n \t
  • Gold medal in the women's division at the 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008 NRA National Action Pistol (Bianchi) Championship, Columbia, Missouri<\/li>\r\n \t
  • Gold medal in the women's division at the 1999 European Action Pistol Championship, Tierney, Italy<\/li>\r\n \t
  • Gold medal, Women's Team, at the 2012 NRA World Action Pistol Championship in Philippsburg, Germany. Vera competed with teammate Helen Jeavon. Vera also captured the bronze medal in the Women's Division at the World Championship as part of the U.S. National Shooting Team, the first time the U.S. team included female members in the Open Category. The other members of the team were Ms. Jessie Duff, Ms. Julie Golob, and Ms. Kim Beckwith<\/li>\r\n \t
  • Gold medal at the 2010 NRA World Action Pistol Championship in Blacktown, Australia. Vera competed with teammate Julie Golob. Vera also captured second place in the Women's Category at the World Championship as part of the USA National Shooting Team<\/li>\r\n \t

    • Vera has been recognized for setting a national record for top score by a women on the outdoor action pistol Crawford Barricade in San Antonio, Texas, on October 8, 2005. She shot 480-45X.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • In September 2006, Vera set a national record for women's score and senior's score in the Barricade Event, 480-43X.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • In November 2010, Vera was recognized for setting a national Senior record in the outdoor action pistol Modified Mover-AP Target, Open Sights, shooting 461-26X; and a national Women's record in the outdoor action pistol Moving-AP Target, shooting 223-10X.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • In August 2011, Vera was recognized for co-holding a national record for senior's score in the Falling Plate Event, 480-48X.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • Vera set a national record for women's score in the Combat Event, shooting a 578, in September 2011.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • Vera has been recognized for setting a national record for women's score in the Practical Even, 480-35X, in October 2011.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • In September 2015, Vera set a national record for women's score in the Texas Mover-AP Target, shooting 466-23X.<\/li>\r\n \t
    • In April 2016, Vera was recognized for setting a national Grand Senior record for her score in the Barricade Event, 480-45X; Modified Moving Target, 462-25X; Falling Plate Event, 460-46X; and the Practical Event, 480-32X.<\/li>\r\n \t
