The road to success is full of challenges and obstacles. Despite the challenges, it is important for us to stay focused and tackle the challenges with devotion and seriousness to achieve our goals. The Most Unlikely Champion by Vera Koo is a well-woven and an inspiring memoir about Vera Koo—an immigrant from Hong Kong, China.

Vera Koo is both a national and world champion in the sport of Action Pistol Shooting, also known as Bianchi Cup. Unlike other competitors who are young, Vera began her shooting sport in her late 40s. She narrates some of the challenges that she faced before becoming successful. For instance, she was brought up in a conservative society characterized by gender disparity—where men dominated over women, she was despised by other shooters who doubted her abilities. Also, she got injured while making her final preparations to take part in the shooting competition. Despite all these challenges, Vera chose not to give up and put her trust in God for guidance.

I enjoyed reading the book. The story is full of emotions and inspiration. The positive aspect that I liked about this wonderful book is the description given of the culture of conservative Chinese people. Also, Vera’s story can be used to motivate people who are experiencing hardship and challenges in their lives. Sincerely, there is nothing I disliked about the book. The language used is simple, making it easy to comprehend the story. It is narrated from the first-person point of view, hence, contributing to its credibility.

Continue Pressing On

The book is about 175 pages long; hence, a little time is required to read it. It is divided into small sections—each section with a short subtitle. The inclusion of Vera’s pictures in the book during different occasions gives the readers a deep understanding of the story. Family, education, marriage, divorce, religion, gender disparity, and culture are some major themes in the book. Christina, Vera’s daughter, is my most liked character. She is loving and caring. She was the first one to visit her mother, Vera, in the hospital.

I rate The Most Unlikely Champion 4 out of 4 stars. It was well-written and informative. Also, it was inspiring and exceptionally edited. I recommend it to those aspiring to join the shooting sport. They will learn a lot of lessons from the book. Also, this book will appeal to those who’re facing challenges in their lives. It will motivate them to continue pressing on.
