The book The Most Unlikely Champion written Vera Koo with Justin Pahl is a well written piece that tells the story of world professional shooting champion, Vera Koo. The book starts off with Vera Koo giving an overall view of what the book is about. It starts her story with mention of how she became involved in the professional shooting scene with the help of her husband and friends. She talks about her life, her family, her career, and a life-altering event that changed everything. Koo tells about adjusting to life after the incident and her faith through it all. After reading the memoir, I would give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

The reason for my rating is that the text was very well edited and gave an interesting view on the struggles one may go through in professional competitions, such as the Bianchi Cup. Being both a woman and a Chinese-American, Vera Koo was against all odds in her events and competitions. And with her incident that occurred, it put a damper on her occupation. Usually, one may feel discouraged from continuing their career after encountering such a tremendous personal issue. Koo pressed on despite this and talks about the issue in the book in great detail to show the strength and perseverance required to make it through. She has shown how faith in God, her family, and herself helped to lift her up in dark times.

A part of the book I enjoyed was when Vera Koo spoke about the personal tragedy she experienced. I liked this because not too many people feel comfortable bringing up such issues to others. This especially holds true when a person’s career is on the line. Most people would either give up or be too embarrassed to look ahead. However, Vera Koo felt comfortable enough to share her experiences. I enjoyed this part of the book because it can be seen as a guide to anyone in a similar situation.

I also liked the glimpse into Koo’s personal life and background that was provided in the story. She spoke of her childhood and marriage and these topics really gave the clear picture of how she took up her hobby and how she managed to cope with the turning point of the book. I was pleased to see all of Vera Koo’s accomplishments. They showed that age really is just a number and anyone can do anything they put the time and effort into.

Enrapturing Story

There were no parts of the book I did not enjoy. I was happy to read Vera Koo’s journey through life and marriage. I especially admired her character throughout the story. I feel that this memoir is for readers that may feel inadequate in a certain area or feel out of place in their group. Most of all, this book is for anyone that needs reassurance in knowing that one can push through any situation despite the odds.

All in all, the book was well written, very enrapturing, and organized very well from beginning to end. It was nice to read about Vera Koo’s accomplishments. Her age did not necessarily define her life and lifestyle preferences. The mention of her time in America and Singapore showed great value in what made her the adult she became. Reading about her early life really gave meaning to “the unlikely champion”. Overall, Vera Koo and Justin Pahl collaborated on an excellent piece that is worth the read.
