In this review from Online Book Club, nikkiloveskiwi tells us why Vera Koo’s book, The Most Unlikely Champion, is her favorite memoir of all time.

There are a lot of problems and adversities that we encounter in our lives. Many times, how we respond to these problems will ultimately decide how our lives will be. How do you overcome the different challenges that come your way?

The Most Unlikely Champion by Vera Koo is a memoir that tells the author’s story and her journey towards becoming a champion in pistol competitions. This biography also tells her life as an Asian American wife and mom and the difficulties she has faced. This book details her story on love, forgiveness, motherhood, and her faith in God.

First of all, this has got to be one of my favorite memoirs of all time. One of the things that made me love this book is that it genuinely shows the beauty of looking on the Brightside of things. If you fall many times in life, it is truly important to rise many times.

Aside from that, the author depicted her story and I am glad that she is such a positive icon of women empowerment. She entered the male-dominated world of piston competitions in her 40’s, but she was able to show that women are just as capable as men in this arena. Besides, she was able to prove that age is just a number.

One of the things I also loved was the pace of this book. The author was able to keep the book interesting from start to finish. The book is told in a non-chronological narrative, which was an effective tool to keep the suspense in the story. Aside from that, this also helped in providing a deeper insight regarding the actions of the characters in the book and their development. I also appreciate that the author was honest about telling the details in her life that may not be so beautiful. In this way, readers would get to see that there is a reason why we experience discomfort and hardships in life.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 4. There is nothing I disliked about this book and I did not find any errors. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a book that would help them be inspired to pursue their dreams. No matter where we are or how old we might be, it is never too late to go for what we want in life. We must be simply willing to go outside our comfort zones and work hard to become a champion.
