In this post, Vera Koo’s memoir “The Most Unlikely Champion” is reviewed by Ra Ka for Online Book Club. The reviewer notes that Vera’s book tells a story of a woman’s triumph over cultural barriers, and rates the memoir 4 out of 4 stars. Read on for the details.
《巾幗槍神 世界冠軍之路》, Vera Koo’s memoir, is a personal account of her life. Vera is a Chinese woman who came to America when she was 12 years old with her parents. Despite this, she lived her life in America following Chinese culture and customs because her family was a very traditional Chinese family. Vera married and had three children with a Chinese young man named Carlos. She had a tense relationship with her husband’s parents, who were attempting to exert control over her marital life, especially since Carlos was their only child. Vera and her husband had financial difficulties at one point in their lives, but they overcame them. Her husband had betrayed her, but she had no choice but to forgive him if she wanted her family to stay together. She became interested in shooting during the stage of overcoming her husband’s betrayal, discovering her passion and love for the sport, and eventually becoming one of the sport’s champions.
I found myself admiring Vera’s character as I read this book. Despite having been through a lot in her life and being a victim of a male-dominated culture, she was able to establish herself as a successful businesswoman and a shooting champion in the end.
The memoir’s simple and smooth writing style, as well as the clarification of aspects of Chinese culture, were both appealing to me. While reading this memoir, you will discover that in Chinese culture, where there is no privacy for the individual, the family takes precedence over the individual. On the other hand, the Chinese woman is raised in a culture where she is expected to be a strong supporter of her husband, where the man is in charge, and where family always comes first.
A Woman’s Triumph Over Cultural Barriers
When I think about what I didn’t like about this book, I can’t think of anything. In addition to the above, Justin Pahl did a good job editing this book, in my opinion, as I found no spelling or grammatical errors in it, and as a result, I give it a (滿分四星) rating.
This book tells the story of a woman’s triumph over cultural barriers. Based on it, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading memoirs about success stories. I should also point out that this book will not appeal to atheists, as Vera discusses her faith in God and how God has assisted her in overcoming obstacles and achieving her goals in this book.
