How one woman went from child immigrant to shooting champion, author and ambassador for the shooting sports.

Fifteen years ago, my first introduction to the world of NRA Women began with my first assignment as a baby editor: Proofread an article describing the life and accomplishments of champion shooter (and NRA Women contributor) Vera Koo. At that moment, I realized that I had found two very important things: the career I wished to pursue for the rest of my life, and a role model.

These days Vera’s star shines even brighter than it did 15 years ago—despite the fact that she’s been retired from the shooting sports since 2018. Vera’s memoir, The Most Unlikely Champion, is the tale of how it all happened. Given that Koo spent 26 years in the world of competitive shooting, claiming the prestigious Bianchi title in the women’s division eight times, along with other illustrious titles, it’s a tale from which all NRA Women can draw inspiration.

Koo’s story is a uniquely American story, but it started in China. Having immigrated to America at the age of 12, Koo’s early years weren’t always easy. Fortunately, Koo had the perseverance and talent to build a business, raise a family…and, of course, become one of the world’s top professional shooters. It’s an inspiring and engaging story, but it’s not the end of the story. She’s now working on her next book, based on her columns featured on “Women’s Outdoor News.” That’s where her new website, VeraKoo.com, shines!

VeraKoo.com isn’t just a place to learn about Koo’s life and accomplishments (although we’d still be there daily even if it were). Along with her columns, the new website offers news about her book, videos, book reviews and more. Our favorite part, of course, is the blog. Divided into categories covering adventure, faith, shooting, inspiration and travel, Vera’s incisive mind and overwhelming positivity represent the goals of NRA Women everywhere.

“Both DISA LLC and Tier 1 Creative have created a fantastic website for my new branding and image. Their joined effort has delivered a website beyond my high expectation of their work. I am a one big, happy customer,” said Koo.
