In this review of Vera Koo’s memoir “The Most Unlikely Champion,” reviewer Foluso Falaye writes about “the amazing Vera Koo.” Keep reading to find out why he gives the book 4 out of 4 stars.

From wanting to learn how to handle guns safely, Vera Koo enrolled in a firearm safety course and developed an interest in guns in the 1980s. She went on to win two world titles and become one of the most accomplished professional women’s shooters in the world and an eight-time winner of the Bianchi Cup: the women’s division of the NRA National Action Pistol Championship. The Most Unlikely Champion is a story about the amazing Vera Koo: a Chinese-American, successful businesswoman, shooting champion, and mother of four children.

Vera Koo shares her tumultuous and challenging path to winning the titles she won as a professional shooter. Her story includes how she persevered through several difficulties, held on to her Christian beliefs, experienced challenges in marriage, struggled to recover from some serious injuries, and had to constantly prove that she belonged in the shooting competitions as a woman and was not there to search for men. Additionally, it reveals how she worked hard to achieve the American dream as a migrant from Hong Kong and worked for 18 hours daily just to make a living.

The Amazing Vera Koo

Imagine standing in the rain for long hours and shooting almost a thousand rounds a day with aching hands. The book is filled with truly inspiring and amazing events. The voice and thoughts of the narrator are projected clearly through the events she related. I felt completely immersed in the story as it is highly descriptive and emotional; I was extremely moved when I read about how Vera almost died and tried to survive alone while suffering from an injury.

The book is recommended to readers interested in the shooting sport and sports in general, and anybody that loves true stories about victory and winning against all odds would enjoy the book. However, it may not appeal to non-Christians as it has a strong theme of Christianity. The author shares about her faith throughout the book as it was one of the things that got her through her challenges.

I rate the book a 4 out of 4 stars as I have no dislikes for this beautiful story. It inspired me to go after my goals even when they seem impossible. Vera’s recounts of how she recovered from different injuries would be helpful to anyone going through similar conditions. Her sportsmanship and dedication to shooting would inspire athletes to go the extra mile and never give up.
